Guinea fowl are a family of birds native to Africa and Madagascar. The helmeted guinea fowl have a bare head and neck, sleek body, smooth dark feathers dotted with white, and a short tail. Guinea fowls are raised, mainly for their gamey flesh, in many parts of the world.
They are extremely good runners and use this method, rather than flying, to escape predators. They’ve also been observed protecting themselves by kicking with their powerful feet.
On our family farm the fowl are appreciated for more than just tasty cuisine. With their alarming calls, these winged watchdogs warn of the presence of predators. It’s no surprise that as a spirit animal, guinea fowl represent protection and groundedness.
